The "Claude Bernard" Grand Prize for Medicine rewards a researcher for his entire career.
Lionel Naccache and his team's research focuses on the cerebral bases and the psychological properties of consciousness and the many unconscious processes that participate in our mental life. He also developed a test to probe the level of consciousness of a non-communicating patient using electroencephalography in response to a series of auditory stimuli. At the same time, he and his team developed an algorithm for classifying states of consciousness from the EEG. He created the first level of consciousness assessment center at APHP and trained a specialized team. He also demonstrated the effectiveness in these patients of a new therapeutic approach based on transcranial electrical stimulation.
